Recycling plastic materials "doesn't work" and "is not the answer" to threats to global oceans and marine wildlife, Boris Johnson has said.
Answering children's questions ahead of the COP26 climate change summit, the prime minister said reusing plastics "doesn't begin to address the problem".
The point he was making is that the end of life of every product and material we make, is in the environment. Even after we reuse it or recycle it a few times, still eventually it will end up in the bin, and in the environment.
We must try, as much as we can, to choose materials that will not harm the environment when they are finally disposed of.
Compostable packaging answers that challenge and can be applied and replace many single use applications.
