Compostable Shrink Wrap in an Era of Tightening Packaging Regulation

Packaging regulation is tightening rapidly across global markets, placing greater scrutiny on recyclability, transparency, and environmental reporting. As a result, packaging material choices are becoming increasingly strategic rather than purely operational.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)


EPR schemes shift the financial and operational burden of packaging waste management onto producers, with fees increasingly modulated by material type and environmental impact. In practice, flexible plastics such as shrink wrap are difficult to recover at scale. While often technically recyclable, they are frequently removed on-site or contaminated, creating uncertainty around actual recycling outcomes and long-term cost exposure. EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)


The PPWR, taking effect from August 2026, requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030, with stricter obligations from 2038. It places growing emphasis on waste reduction and demonstrable real-world outcomes, rather than theoretical recyclability alone.


Alongside regulation, consumer expectations are influencing packaging strategy. Studies consistently show strong consumer preference for packaging that is clearly compostable or plastic-free, particularly where disposal is intuitive. For brands, compostable packaging can reduce confusion around recyclability claims and support trust by aligning sustainability messaging with actual disposal behaviour.


Compostability as a Practical End-of-Life Strategy


Compostable shrink wrap is designed to meet strict, measurable standards, with certification playing a critical role in credibility and correct waste handling. Certified materials provide clear, verifiable claims and guidance to waste operators and end users, helping reduce the risk of greenwashing.


Compostability is not positioned as a universal replacement for recyclable plastics. Instead, it is a targeted solution for applications where recycling does not deliver in reality - particularly where shrink wrap is removed on-site or becomes contaminated.


The key compostability standard in Europe is EN 13432, confirming suitability for industrial composting, including requirements for disintegration, biodegradation, and eco-toxicity.

When correctly certified and applied, compostable shrink wrap supports sustainability and risk-management objectives without operational disruption. It is designed to run on existing shrink-wrapping machinery, allowing businesses to trial or adopt it without significant capital investment.


Compostable shrink wrap performs in the same way as conventional shrink films, offering reliable shrink behaviour, good puncture resistance, consistent shrink ratios, and a clear, glossy appearance. Modern compostable films typically run on standard automated lines, with changeovers limited to minor adjustments to sealing temperatures or dwell times rather than new equipment.

Drinks

Compostable shrink wrap is well suited for bundling cans, bottles, and multipacks where conventional shrink films are rarely recovered. It supports visible sustainability commitments and responds to growing consumer demand for reduced plastic at point of sale.


Print & publishing

For paper-based products, compostable shrink wrap creates a coherent environmental profile while protecting magazines, books, and printed materials during transit and distribution.


Fresh produce

For secondary packaging of fruit and vegetables, compostable shrink wrap works well in environments where films are contaminated with food residue and where organic waste streams already exist.


Secondary packaging

Secondary packaging represents a significant opportunity for impact. Compostable shrink wrap can be used for transit packaging and pallet stabilisation, helping reduce plastic footprint without sacrificing protection.
